Baby/Toddler Clothes

5-29-08

We belong to a French and Indian War unit, Massachusetts Provincial Battalion, and there were 3 babies born within a few months of each other last year (including CJ). They decided they wanted to have a 1st birthday party at the Port Huron Feast of St. Clair event. Just a little luncheon really. So CJ needed an 18th century outfit.

I altered a coat and pants pattern and made him a pair of elastic waist "breeches" that are short and pleated at the bottom instead of buttoned (I avoided buttons because he always tries to eat them off of anyone who is holding him) and I made a long vest that does not yet have a closure. I used a cotton/linen blend.

I used the left over hanky weight linen from my renaissance smock to make him a larger shirt with collar than the other one he has because it's starting to get small and I wanted to make him one that was lighter because it was supposed to be 80 degrees out, but it ended up being more like 60.

I also had made him a coat out of some coat weight wool that I had, and I crewel-work embroidered a squirrel on the back by hand. I got the pattern for the squirrel out of this really nifty crewel work embroidery book I have.

When we got there and we were all dressed up, CJ freaked out because he didn't recognize his mommy or daddy. So I got back into my street clothes and CJ's world was back to normal. Oh, and the muskets & cannons didn't phase him the slightest bit, but mommy in a skirt, OMG!
