I'm Making:

CJ's Halloween 2008 Costume

"Lord of the Rings"
Gandalf

Last year, CJ was Merry and Ian was Pippin, I was in my Eowyn outfit. Click to see larger image, and picture of Ian.

I decided to continue the whole Lord of the Rings theme I had going.

So, anyway, this year, I decided that CJ would be Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. He'll be 17 months old, it's not like he really has a preference. He can say Door, Doggie, Daddy, Momma, Nana, Papa, Gidgey, Up, Gamma, Hat, Head, Shoes, Cookie, Pease and Bye Bye (clearly)

I used gray fleece and made him the wizards robes (see "pattern" to the left) with a really basic tunic pattern. I also made a light gray long sleeved t-shirt from cotton knit. I actually made two and on one of them I drew (with Sharpie and a Glow-in-the-Dark Fabric Pen) Trogdor, the Burninator (see photo right, click on the photo for an enlarged image).

I also made a nice hat from felt, as I was cutting out the gray felt, my brother-in-law, Dave reminded me that Gandalf's hat is blue instead of gray. We even looked it up in the Hobbit, and sure enough, the first description of Gandalf, he has a blue hat and everything else is gray. What kind of color blind wizard wears a blue hat and gray outfit? Anyway. I decided to add fusible Angelina fibers to the hat, and even then it wasn't blue enough, so I added blue seed beads that I hand stitched on in a random pattern, concentrated at the base of the hat, only on the crown. See photo to the right (click on the photo for an enlarged image) it's sitting on a chair at work.

I also added some fusible reflective trim on the sides and down the arms, and in a little star on his chest. I figured with all the gray, he needed something to help him show up more to cars. It really shows up in the photos.

Here are some photos of CJ on Halloween.

CJ really enjoyed Halloween. He got to meet lots of new people, some of them gave him stuff, he got to do stairs, which he loves, and all sorts of friendly people came up to the front door that he could say "HI!" and wave "BYE BYE!" to. And of course he especially loved the little girls and kids his size that came to the door. Next year is going to be even more fun, and Mom can't wait to go with him, even if it means calling off work. She's already got part of next year's elf costume...
